Want to learn more about the Gulf Stream and relative latitudes? Then have a look at the following books: The reason many European cities have milder climates than equivalent cities in North America at the same latitude is of course the Gulf Stream.Ĭurious what the map for the Southern hemisphere might look like? Well Reddit user Yearlaren has created the following map of South American cities transposed with Australian and New Zealand ones: The map also shows just how wide America and Canada are compared to Europe, stretching the equivalent distance from Spain to the Caspian Sea.Missoula is placed roughly where Geneva is.Reykjavik’s average temperature in January is -0.6☌ (31☏) and is warmer than Boston’s average January temperature of -1.7☌ (29☏) despite Reykjavik being over 20 degrees further north (64☀8′N vs 42☂1′N).Even the city’s flag has Ukraine colours. Winnipeg has been placed near Lviv, Ukraine and coincidentally has a large Ukraine population. ![]() Anchorage is further south than Reykjavik.Los Angeles, San Diego, Phoenix and Houston are all at the same latitude as North Africa.Honolulu at the same latitude as the Sahara desert.Miami is at the same latitude as Saudi Arabia.(Credit: reddit users twomancanoe and svaachkuet) People from Phoenix today are known as Phoenicians. Phoenix is placed close to the Ancient city of Carthage, which was a Phoenician city-state.London (51☃0′N) is farther north than Calgary (51☀3′N) with Amsterdam, Berlin and Dublin being located even further north. The map above does an excellent job of illustrating the relative latitudes of European and North American cities by transposing them on the opposite continent.Īs with our previous look at the Counterintuitive Comparison Of Relative Population Latitudes Of US, Canada & Europe, there are quite a few interesting things to note. I think a lot of people just like visiting a couple museums, anyway, on a trip, so if a city has 6 good ones or 20, it doesn't matter so much.Maps created by Beardsley Klamm via metafilter I think you can spend as much time in Prague as someone might in London, but if you want to go to a lot of English theater in London and every museum, you can spend a lot more time on that kind of thing than you would in Prague. ![]() Now I don't know about Venice and Rom, but I don't think it matters whether London and Prague are different in size, I think the important thing is why you are visiting a city and what you want to see and do. Of course that's not true, but a lot of people felt that way because they don't go anywhere in Paris except the immediate center area about 1 square mile.Ī first-time tourist isn't going to be visiting all of Prague. I've seen similar posts on Fodors (some years now) where people claimed Paris was the same size or smaller than Manhattan in physical size. Tourists usually just visit things in a city within a small concentrated area, regardless of the actual size of the city in total. Aside from Salzburg, which is much smaller as well as the small towns you mention, I don't think it matters that much the actual size of the city for a tourist. I thought PRague was about a million, that doesn't surprise me.
